Polk County Gets Tough
on Invasives

On March 11, 2008, Polk County passed an Illegal Transport of Aquatic Plants and Invasive Animals ordinance.  The new ordinance will help protect area lakes and rivers from the transfer of non-native plants and animals from nearby infested waterbodies.

Effective March 19, 2008, the new ordinance makes it unlawful to launch or operate on a public roadway any boat, boat trailer, or hunting, trapping, fishing, or boating equipment, including canoes, lines, anchors, nets, decoys, and waders, if aquatic plants or invasive animals are attached. This ordinance is enforceable by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and carries a citation of $200-$500.

Please help us protect the lakes and rivers in Polk County and surrounding communities!  Clean your boat and all equipment from mud, plants, and debris before leaving the landing. Invasive species can hurt the economy, the lake ecosystem, and our recreational opportunities. Spread this word to your visitors this summer also.

If you would like to obtain a copy of the ordinance, visit the Polk County Land and Water Resources Department web page at www.co.polk.wi.us/landwater/.

For more information about aquatic invasive species, stop by the new kiosks at the Bone Lake north boat landing (Lions Club Bone Lake Point) and the south boat landing. Visit the Wisconsin DNR website, too: www.dnr.wi.gov/invasives.
